Tepito
Cry MachoTepito is the district in which Mike searches for Calle Cacha, a street listed in his pocket directory but difficult to find on the ground. The neighborhood’s poverty, danger, and tangled alleys shape the search into an episode of disorientation: Mike enters looking for a specific address and ends up unable to find his way out.
Setting and Character
The part of Tepito that Mike visits is described as poor and troubled by violence. He has been there only once before, in daylight; at night, the area is deserted. The contrast makes the district feel different after dark, while keeping the account anchored in Mike’s experience of a particular part of the neighborhood rather than offering a broad portrait of Tepito as a whole.
The Search for Calle Cacha
Mike walks for hours, doubling back through alleys without finding the street where the directory indicates it should be. The directory gives only one clue: Calle Cacha is in the Tepito section. The few people he encounters provide little help. One has never heard of the street; another recognizes the name but remains vague and hurries away.
When Mike gives up and tries to return to his hotel, he discovers that he cannot find an exit. The passages are narrow and twisting, and he finds no route to a wider street. A shop window offers a point of light, but the shoemaker’s shop is empty; its clock reads nine, though the hour feels later to him. Turning from the window, Mike sees Calle Cacha painted, almost faded, on a wall across an alley.
Narrative Significance
Tepito’s role in this episode rests on the gap between a street’s appearance in a directory and Mike’s inability to locate it. The search first makes Calle Cacha seem nearly unavailable: the map gives no useful detail, residents offer no clear directions, and the alleys repeatedly lead him back into the district. The final painted name resolves the immediate question of where the street is, but only after Mike has become lost. The neighborhood thus becomes the setting for a reversal: the route he sought emerges not from the directory or a helpful guide, but from the darkness around him.
